UN Commissioner Of Human Rights Files Intervention Application In SC On CAA

In the evening of March 2, 2020 (Monday) United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, informed India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva that it has filed application for intervention in Supreme Court of India against Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA).

In an novel move, the UN Commissioner for Human Rights has moved an intervention application in the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India on the Citizenship Amendment Act matter.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights informed India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva yesterday that her Office had filed the intervention application.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Raveesh Kumar, reacting to the move by the UNHRC said that The Citizenship Amendment Act is an internal matter of India and concerns the sovereign right of the Indian Parliament to make laws. We strongly believe that no foreign party has any locus standi on issues pertaining to India’s sovereignty.

India is a democratic country governed by the rule of law. We all have utmost respect for and full trust in our independent judiciary. We are confident that our sound and legally sustainable position would be vindicated by the Hon’ble Supreme Court, the MEA spokesperson added.
