Judicial journey: Former Chief Justice Of India Dipak Mishra

About:

Justice Dipak Mishra born on 3rd of October 1953. He began his career as an advocate and practiced in Constitutional, Civil, Criminal, Revenue, Services and sales tax matters at the Orrissa High Court and the Service Tribunal.

On 28th August 2017, he was appointed as the 45th Chief Justice of India by the President of India Mr. Ram Nath Kovind.

Judicial Journey Of Dipak Mishra:

  1. He headed the bench that dismissed Mumbai serial blast convict Yakub Memon’s plea seeking a stay on his execution.
  2. He headed the bench that upholded the death sentence given to Nirbhaya’s killers.
  3. Justice Dipak Mishra directed Delhi Police to upload FIRs on their website within 24 hours of registration so the accused could download then and seek redressal of their grievances.
  4. He was part of the bench that ordered playing of the National Anthem in the beginning of a film in theaters as mandatory. Later relaxed it for differently abled people.
  5. The Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Mishra settled the 120 years old dispute over the Kaveri river.
  6. Justice Mishra struck down Section 377 of Indian Penal Code citing it to be irrational.
  7. A five Judge bench, headed by CJI Dipak Mishra gave his verdict on the Aadhaar issue. He made it clear that it will stay but it will not be mandatory to link the Aadhaar card with bank accounts and phone numbers.
  8. On 27th September 2018, CJI Dipak Mishra read the judhment that adultery will no longer be a criminal offences, but can serve as a reason for other civil issues, such as divorce.
